Two-book series

The road from digital abundance to human abundance

1. Book 1 [From Tokens to Atoms](https://abundance.alloconomy.com/alloconomy/ai-can-make-intelligence-cheap-but-can-it-make-life-abundant/) Digital intelligence meets the physical stack.
2. Book 2 **When Scarcity Breaks** Current essay Physical breakthroughs must reach ordinary life.

*Why I’m writing* [*When Scarcity Breaks*](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0HBM5W6LM?ref=abundance.alloconomy.com)

At the Tesla Diner in Los Angeles, one word stopped me: **abundance**.

*The image that sent me searching through the civilization stack. Photo by the author.*

I kept returning to that image—not because “abundance” sounded inspiring, but because it sounded testable.

What would have to change for abundance to leave the screen, enter the physical world, and reach an ordinary life?

So I followed that word through the civilization stack.

## Cut to: heat beneath our feet

![A geothermal well system reaching deep, hot rock through engineered horizontal wells, with durability and scale as the test.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/f5/a9/f5a9f801-5a10-44d6-b07c-6658660be1a9/content/images/2026/08/heat-beneath-our-feet.png)

[Fervo](https://fervoenergy.com/fervo-energy-announces-technology-breakthrough-in-next-generation-geothermal/?ref=abundance.alloconomy.com) uses horizontal wells to circulate fluid through hot rock. [Quaise](https://www.quaise.energy/news/from-lab-to-field-testing?ref=abundance.alloconomy.com) reports early field tests of millimeter-wave rock removal aimed at hotter, deeper formations.

The aha moment was not merely “more electricity.” It was that access to geothermal energy might become an engineered process instead of geological luck.

But can a spectacular borehole become an energy system that delivers for years?

## Cut to: manufacturing fire

![A molecule factory combining electricity, water, and atmospheric carbon to produce synthetic methane and methanol.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/f5/a9/f5a9f801-5a10-44d6-b07c-6658660be1a9/content/images/2026/08/manufacturing-fire.png)

[Terraform Industries](https://terraformindustries.com/?ref=abundance.alloconomy.com) is developing modular systems that combine electricity, water, and carbon captured from air to make synthetic methane and methanol.

Think about the reversal: instead of extracting a fuel molecule, could we manufacture it—with sunlight supplying the energy and the atmosphere providing carbon?

If that becomes economical at scale, gas becomes something we make, store, and transport.

## Cut to: matter learning new tricks

![Sensors sorting mine waste, biology growing materials, and a bridge reporting its own structural condition.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/f5/a9/f5a9f801-5a10-44d6-b07c-6658660be1a9/content/images/2026/08/matter-learning-new-tricks.png)

At a mine, sensors could reject waste rock before a plant spends energy grinding it. Elsewhere, biology could grow materials and structures could report their own condition.

Matter does not become software. But it may become more observable, controllable, and programmable.

## Cut to: the factory remembering

![A factory memory system reusing verified process, quality, supplier, and maintenance decisions across modular production.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/f5/a9/f5a9f801-5a10-44d6-b07c-6658660be1a9/content/images/2026/08/factory-remembering.png)

A software-like factory need not make a million identical objects. It can make approved decisions reusable, letting a custom product remain custom while tested modules flow through production.

**The factory becomes a memory.** Then machines help make machines—and productive capacity itself can compound.

When those machines move into mines and construction sites, dust, weather, and exceptions decide whether the promise survives.

## Cut to: a wall rising from the ground beneath it

![A construction robot turning local earth into a wall beside the remaining layers of housing cost: land, utilities, permits, labor, materials, finance, and demand.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/f5/a9/f5a9f801-5a10-44d6-b07c-6658660be1a9/content/images/2026/08/wall-rising.png)

[Terran Robotics](https://www.terranrobotics.ai/about?ref=abundance.alloconomy.com) describes cable-driven machines that place and compact local-earth mixtures, and says its robots are working on the company’s first paid build.

The excavated pile beside a foundation could become the wall.

Then came one of the book’s sharpest reversals: even if the wall became dramatically cheaper, the home might not.

Land, utilities, permits, and finance remain. A breakthrough changes its slice of the system. Human abundance depends on everything else.

## Cut to: farms, water—and even weather

![Precision farming, water reuse, and weather measurement connected to the delivery of usable water to homes and fields.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/f5/a9/f5a9f801-5a10-44d6-b07c-6658660be1a9/content/images/2026/08/farms-water-weather.png)

Imagine crops observed plant by plant, wastewater used again, and cloud seeding measured against what would have happened anyway.

Seeing water is not the same as saving it. Seeding a cloud is not the same as summoning a storm.

The recurring question is not “Does the device work?” It is “Does usable water reach the person or field that needs it?”

## Then the camera leaves Earth

![A launch vehicle, spacecraft, and deep-space antennas showing why missions need both lift and communications.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/f5/a9/f5a9f801-5a10-44d6-b07c-6658660be1a9/content/images/2026/08/deep-space.png)

[Longshot Space](https://longshotspace.com/?ref=abundance.alloconomy.com) is testing ground-accelerator launch. [Cascade Space](https://www.cascadespace.com/?ref=abundance.alloconomy.com) is building smaller-dish arrays for deep-space communication. [AstroForge](https://www.astroforge.com/updates-collection/odint-mission-debrief?ref=abundance.alloconomy.com) is pursuing asteroid prospecting; it reports that Odin reached deep space but never established sustained communications.

Cheap launch without communications is stranded capacity. Communications without missions is an empty network. Resource missions need both.

The next great scarcity in space may not be rockets.

It may be the ability to hold a conversation.

## The reveal

![A civilization stack connecting intelligence, energy, materials, machines, infrastructure, institutions, and ordinary life.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/f5/a9/f5a9f801-5a10-44d6-b07c-6658660be1a9/content/images/2026/08/the-reveal.png)

These are not disconnected moonshots. They are layers of one system.

Intelligence helps redesign energy. Energy changes materials. Materials become machines. Machines build infrastructure. Institutions decide who may build, who owns the result, and whether the gain reaches ordinary life.

That is the central idea of *When Scarcity Breaks*: a breakthrough changes civilization only when its effects travel through the stack and arrive in human life.

This is not a forecast, and including these companies is not an endorsement. It is a map of possibilities—and of the bottlenecks standing between a demonstration and civilization.

I began by asking what the world’s biggest company might be doing twenty years from now. The better question became: **What capability must become dependable, affordable, and widely accessible to improve millions of lives?**

That question is also for my children. I do not want to predict their safest career. I want them to see an unfinished world: hard-to-reach heat, wasteful materials, expensive homes, insecure water, fragile machines, and deep-space systems still assembled mission by mission.

Those are not reasons for despair. They are invitations to build.

I have used AI agents extensively—and unapologetically—to research, draft, and challenge this book. I set the questions, verify consequential sources, make the judgments, and own the result. A book about digital abundance crossing into physical abundance should use the tools already demonstrating the first half of that transition.

I am learning in public because no single perspective can map this terrain. Tell me where the chain is wrong—or where reality is moving faster than I think.
